Today, as a board-certified plastic surgeon, I want to share with you, without any filters, the truths that are often hidden in the world of cosmetic plastic surgery. I want you to have real information so you can make safe, well-informed, and informed decisions.
1. “Plastic surgery is just vanity”
No. It's also about self-esteem, reconstruction, emotional health, and even functionality. I've seen how my patients' lives change after correcting something that had weighed on them for years and made them feel insecure, embarrassed, and dissatisfied.
2. “With liposuction you will never gain weight again.”
Liposuction removes localized fat, but if you don't change your habits, your body can accumulate fat in other areas. It's a start or an aid to improving your body contour, not a free pass to continue unhealthy lifestyle habits, nor should it be considered a quick fix.
3. “Implants last a lifetime”
Implants don't last forever. Regular checkups are recommended, and you should be alert to any warning signs or symptoms such as pain, deformity, and changes in skin color. They often require replacement after a certain number of years. Safety and follow-up are key to successful breast augmentation with implants.
4. “Plastic surgery doesn’t leave scars.”
All surgeries leave scars. Plastic surgeons are known for making small, aesthetically pleasing, and camouflaged incisions. The technique or procedure you undergo determines how visible they will be, and your postoperative care makes all the difference.
5. “The next day I will be perfect”
No. The recovery process is just as important as the surgery itself. Giving your body time is part of achieving a successful outcome. Most surgeries require at least three months of recovery for the final results to become apparent.
6. “If I have surgery with a doctor, it’s because he’s a plastic surgeon.”
Caution. Not all who call themselves "cosmetic surgeons" are. Your responsibility as a patient is to always verify the credentials and certifications of both the surgeon and the clinic where you are having the surgery. Your safety comes first.
7. “Plastic surgery is always dangerous.”
With a board-certified surgeon and safety protocols, the risk is greatly reduced. Choosing your surgeon wisely means choosing your peace of mind.
8. “The results are permanent without effort”
It's possible to achieve lasting and definitive results, but it depends not only on the procedure and your postoperative care, but also on your lifestyle after surgery. It's a team effort: your surgeon, you, and your body.
💌This is my commitment: to give you clear, unvarnished information so you can make confident and realistic decisions. Plastic surgery can be transformative, but it also requires responsibility and care.
